Calling cards, Derby Edition

The latest installment of an ongoing project re-imagining the Surrealist calling cards handed out by Breton, Peret et al. during the early and short lived days of the Bureau of Surrealist Enquiries.

This set of 62* cards was created to honor the revolutionary spirit at the heart of Dada, Surrealism and the early years of modern roller derby (2011-201?ish).

With a focus on irreverent means of calling attention to the hypocrisies of society, all three movements utilized costumery, humor and ‘play violence’ whilst simultaneously pushing for the unification of art and life.

This deck also intentionally focuses on the truly international nature of Surrealism, an evangelical demonstration that Surrealism is far more powerful, widespread and active than commonly assumed.

Hand collaged from found and re-purposed materials including old playing cards, circle stickers and paint chip cards with skate gear printed out from the artist’s personal photos of local roller derby teams.
